FAQ

Why not make your own biodiesel? We will supply and install a biodiesel processing plant of your own, taking up less space than half a standard garage, making quality biodiesel for your vans and cars. The equipment is simple to operate and takes just a few hours work a week. We deliver direct to you all that you need on a daily, weekly or monthly schedule. All you need do is pump the waste oil and chemicals into the processor, switch it on and wait. A few hours later, you will have produced over 100 litres of quality biodiesel that can be put into most diesel vehicles with no modification, and no difference in performance or economy.

How much will the equipment cost? The initial investment will vary, depending on how much fuel you intend to make, but systems start from just over £1,200, which will normally be considerably less than the savings you will make in the first year alone. After that, your free biodiesel processing plant, effectively paid for by the government from the savings on fuel duty, will produce low cost, quality biodiesel year after year.

How much does it cost to make biodiesel? The waste vegetable oil and chemicals will be supplied to you at a fixed price for the first year, normally allowing you to recover more than the equipment cost during the first year of operation. The current cost of the waste oil and chemicals is equivalent to just over 40p per litre, electricity will add no more than 2p. That's less than 50p per litre for safe, environmentally friendly fuel.  Make less than 2,500 litres a year and legally you will not need to pay any fuel duty. At today's pump prices that shows a cost saving of well over 50% of your fuel bill.

We run 4 vans and 3 cars, so what good is only 2,500 litres a year? Just make more, but you will need to pay fuel duty at the reduced rate of 34p per litre. Make 10,000 litres a year (40p + 2p + 34p is still only around 80p per litre) and you've just reduced your annual fleet fuel costs by 20% as well as going "green".

Surely the government wants it's cut? HM Revenue and Customs kindly allows each of us to make and use up to 2,500 litres of fuel a year for our own use without paying any fuel duty. If you make above this limit, they will charge you 34p per litre, still far less than the 52p you pay if you fill up at your local garage or supermarket.

How much will I save? If you make 2,500 litres a year (just one batch every fortnight) and pay no fuel duty, you should save more than £1,500 per year. If you make 10,000 litres a year (just over 2 batches a week) and pay the reduced duty of 34p, you should save over £2,000 a year. Savings are based on diesel at the forecourt costing £1.00 per litre, including fuel duty of 52p.

Where do I get my waste vegetable oil? You don't need to find your own supply, nor get your hands dirty filtering out the chips and removing the water. We offer an on-going supply of both waste oil and chemicals, delivered direct to you when you need it. The prices in the first year will be fixed, thereafter, you can either buy at the current market prices each time you place your order, or we can quote you for a whole year's supply at a fixed price and you can advance order next year's supplies at today's prices. Peace of mind.

What about waste products? The process produces very few waste products and we will safely remove these at no cost to you.

Do I need to be a scientist? No. We provide initial training within the price of the equipment so that you can understand what goes on, and we leave you with an idiot's guide instruction sheet. The equipment is mostly completely automated requiring little knowledge or effort. Calculating the chemical quantities is a simple matter using the equipment supplied, but for those looking for an even easier life, we will, for a small charge, test the vegetable oil before delivery, make the calculations for you and pre-mix the chemicals to the correct values.

How do know the biodiesel I make is of good quality? Again, we include all the necessary equipment for you to test your own finished product. For small users, that is all that is required. If you make larger quantities you are required (by HM Revenue and Customs) to submit samples to an independent laboratory for a full analysis (normally only one test a year costing just over £100).

Which vehicles can use my own biodiesel? Most diesel vehicles manufactured between 1992 and 2004 run very well on 100% biodiesel with no modifications required. Older cars will run happily but their fuel pipes and injector pump seals may be made of rubber, which will be attacked by the biodiesel (renewing/replacing these is normally a simple and relatively cheap process). Newer cars tend not to like 100% biodiesel, and warranties may exclude its use, but these will run happily on blends. It's usually a matter of trial and error, but many people use 10%, 25% and sometimes as much as 75% biodiesel mixed with fossil diesel.

What happens if the price of waste vegetable oil and chemicals rises to over £1 per litre? Find an alternative supplier or just stop production. With fixed price supplies in the first year, you will already have had back all your capital cost, so if oil is too dear, just stop using it.

Am I tied into a contract? No. We guarantee to offer you enough waste vegetable oil and chemicals at a fixed price to be able to make 2,500 litres in the first year, normally enough to get all of your initial investment back. But you are under no obligation to actually buy them. If you can find a cheaper source, go for it. We will resell your allocation at the end of the year if you don't buy it.

What happens if the 2,500 litre allowance is stopped by the government? Almost impossible (a long story which we will tell you face to face) but if it's not worth doing and you've already had your money back, just stop making it.

What could go wrong? Fossil diesel may drop to less than 80p a litre; waste oil could rise to £1.00 per litre; the government may ban biofuels; cheap, pollution free electric cars may suddenly be readily available; etc.

What could make this even better? Fossil diesel may go back up to £1.40 a litre; Europe may remove fuel duty on biofuels in the UK as they have done in Germany, Italy and France; the government might call a general election tomorrow and the Green Party might win and ban fossil fuels, leaving you and a few thousand other like minded people driving along totally empty roads on 50p per litre green fuel.

Why isn't everyone doing this already? Most people cannot get enough waste vegetable oil, or do not want to de-water and filter it themselves, or cannot get the chemicals at a sensible price, or do not know how to make quality biodiesel, or just plain couldn't be bothered. We make the whole process so easy. We supply everything that you need, and deliver it to you; our processor is semi automatic, so you have very little to do; we include an on-site training course, where you will actually make your first batch of biodiesel under our expert supervision; and we find that the thought of getting a free biodiesel processor paid for by HM Revenue and Customs and then legally doing them out of fuel duty is normally enough motivation to make the effort.
